When Chennai Drowned!

Last week Chennai city witnessed a gargantuan catastrophe with the unprecedented rainfall leaving it in shambles. The unpredictably incessant downpour went on until most parts of the city submerged under water and homes of many were severely ruined. The roads caved in and the scary vortexes erupted the sewer holes obscured by stagnant water. The swift increase in the intensity of rainfall led to reservoir releases further worsening the situation. There was no effective way to direct the excessive flood water because sheltered waterways and conduits were clogged by garbage. There are a swarm of reasons behind Chennai witnessing the floods, the sewage system, poor infrastructure planning, and the glaringly obvious monsoon rainfall pounding the city. Before we begin to decipher the actual cause of the flood, there is a pressing issue at hand that must be understood and dealt with – ‘Climate Change’.

Climate change has impacted the occurrence of flash floods to a great extent. There is no way to soften the blow of climatic change if we don’t act now and wisely. If the emissions causing global warming resume unabated, studies show that the frequency of heavy flooding due to rainfall is bound to increase, leading to devastation of livelihood in more ways than one can ever comprehend. Efforts must be taken by municipalities to curb these discharges dramatically to save the planet from imminent doom. To ensure a safe and sustainable future, we need to adopt renewable energy, utilize and become accustomed to resources that do not affect annual precipitation levels. Paataali Makkal Katchi’s youth president  and Chief Ministerial candidate Dr.Anbumani Ramadoss has drafted a clever zonal blueprint for industrial and residential clusters that will greatly improve the economy and is simultaneously guaranteed to protect the environment from such adversities. Moreover he is widely recognised for his role in the widely successful Pasumai Thaayagam (meaning “Green Motherland”) an NGO that promotes environmental conservation. The organisation has a special consultative status with the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

The recent rainfall in Chennai affected the agricultural sectors by overwhelming the capacity of drainage channels in rural areas. Although many farmers and their families were safely evacuated from the affected regions, the destruction caused to their property, belongings and crop yields is to a point of no return. This irrevocable damage has psychologically affected many low-income receiving sections of the society. Dr.Anbumani Ramadoss has passionately expressed his brilliant plans to uplift Chennai from this state of upheaval. The party has distributed relief supplies in large numbers and has also taken care of rebuilding costs and food shortages. As stated in The Hindu dated November 21, 2015; ‘The PMK had warned the State Government before the commencement of the monsoon period on precautionary measures to be taken, but the people in power did not accord importance to the same.’

Dr.Anbumani Ramadoss went all out and personally attended to the distress of flood victims by getting his party to organize medical camps throughout the city. He treated the people, advised them about preventive measures and cautioned them about the outbreak of serious illnesses. He has high praise for numerous NGO’s, The NDRF, NDMA, Indian Army, Navy and Air Force who’ve stepped up and carried out rescue and relief operations very efficiently to restore Chennai . He personally visited many localities that were badly hit by the flood.

The Paataali Makkal Katchi is also planning to successfully execute ways to use up the recharged ground water. The party has also devised methods to elevate the condition of fisheries in Tamil Nadu. Floods can bring in certain benefits like increasing the nutrient percentage in soil and water bodies thus providing nourishment to salt water and fresh water fishes thereby increasing their commercial value in markets when sold. Party founder Dr. S.Ramadoss said that the Paataali Makkal Katchi has a blueprint for the development of Tamil Nadu setting them apart from any other party contesting for the upcoming elections.
